Biography: He was one of the last and most illustrious of the Gaonim, the post-Talmudic authorities of Judaism in Babylonia. He waged a successful struggle against the Karaites and other splinter groups. He wrote the Arab translation of the Bible and a commentary. He was principal of the yeshiva at Pumbedisa and translated the Pentateuch into Arabic.
