Biography: A Babylonian Amora of the first generation, he founded the academy at Sura. Born to a wealthy family, he went to Eretz Israel to join his uncle Chiyya and study with Judah HaNasi. Eventually he returned to Babylonia to establish his own academy at Sura. He is known for his homiletical discourses and ethical teachings. His principle opponent was Mar Samuel.
