Biography: A Tanna of the second century, he was one of the seven disciples of Akiva who fled to Babylonia after his master's martyrdom at the hands of the Romans. He earned a living as a leather worker. He often disputed with non-Jews, especially a certain Roman matron. He had five sons, all of whom became Torah scholars.
