Biography: A Tanna of the second century who, aside from his teacher, Akiva, was the most eminent and original of all the Tannaim. Little is known of his origin, but legend says he came from a family of converts. He made his living as a copyist. His wife, Beruriah, was the learned daughter of Rabbi Hananiah ben Teradion. He was one of the seven disciples of Akiva who fled to Babylonia after his master's martyrdom at the hands of the Romans.
