Biography: He was a very distinguished Babylonian Amora of the third and fourth centuries. He was born into a family of priests, but his father had died before he was born. Though a great scholar, he was a farmer and worked the fields by himself. He was financially well-off but was a modest and fair minded man. He became principal of the academy in Pumbedita.
