Name: Hillel
Born: 75 B.C.E.
Biography: He was born in Babylonia but came to Jerusalem to study with the rabbis. He claimed descent from the house of David on his mother's side. He was very poor and found it difficult to study without starving. He worked at hard labor, but eventually was recognized for his brilliance and became president of the Sanhedrin. His chief intellectual opponent was Shammai. He was known for his patience, gentleness and liberal approach to Jewish law.
