Biography: A contemporary of Akiva and one of his chief opponents in the interpretation of the Law, he was the son of the High Priest Elisha. He founded a school in Usha and was a member of the Sanhedrin, then at Yavneh. His is best known for the 13 exegetic principles by which the Scriptures can be interpreted. He was one of the ten martyrs executed by the Romans.
