Biography: One of the members of the Great Bet Din, he was vice president of the Sanhedrin during the reign of Alexander Yannai. He was a Pharisee who opposed the rule of Yannai, a Sadducee. He was strict in his administration of the law and laid the foundations for good elementary school education among Jews. He was very poor but noted for his honesty, including among Arabs.
